Properties with 5 or more households
Waste Collection Obligations by Waste Type
According to the Waste Management Regulations of the Lahti region, all properties in the urban areas of the municipalities within the service area, with 5 or more apartments, must sort and separately collect the following types of waste:
- Biowaste
- Plastic packaging
- Carton packaging
- Glass packaging
- Metal packaging
- Mixed waste
- Paper, in accordance with sections 49 and 50 of the Waste Act
A property with at least five apartments refers to:
- A building with at least 5 apartments, or
- Semi-detached, row, or apartment buildings, as well as company-owned detached houses that use a common waste collection point and have a combined total of five (5) or more apartments.
Salpakierto currently organizes mixed waste transportation in Kärkölä, Heinola’s sparsely populated areas, and Orimattila’s Artjärvi. Elsewhere in the service area, mixed waste transportation is handled by the property owner. Waste management is joined by contacting the transportation company. From April 2026, mixed waste transportation will also be transferred to the jointly tendered waste transportation organized by Salpakierto in the service area.
Composting does not remove the obligation to separately collect biowaste from properties with at least five apartments in urban areas.
The transportation and emptying of biowaste and packaging waste have been jointly tendered, and emptying is ordered from Salpakierto. Waste fees are decided by the Lahti region waste board.
Properties not covered by the collection obligation can voluntarily order emptying throughout the service area. Check the property’s inclusion in the collection obligation area from the map application.
Housing companies must organize paper collection in accordance with sections 49 and 50 of the Waste Act. Paper is collected free of charge from properties located in apartment and row house areas. Properties themselves or together with neighboring properties acquire waste bins for paper collection and arrange a placement for them.
