Waste management fees

COLLECTION FEES

WASTE COLLECTION ARRANGED BY SALPAKIERTO

In areas where Salpakierto arranges waste management, collection services are arranged via a public tendering process and fees are determined in the decision on rates approved by the Lahti Region Waste Management Committee. These areas are Kärkölä, Artjärvi in Orimattila and sparsely populated area in Heinola with regard to energy and mixed waste, and the centres of Orimattila and Heinola with regard to biowaste.

The collection of biowaste and packaging waste will be arranged by Salpakierto in stages from 1 August 2023:

  • Plastic packaging from 1 August 2023 -> the obligation to collect energy waste ends at this point
  • Carton packaging from 1 October 2023
  • Glass packaging and metal from 1 January 2024
  • Biowaste in properties with 5 or more households from 1 March 2024
  • Biowaste in properties wit 1-4 households in urban areas with more than 10.000 residents from 1 July 2024

Also, fees for regional collection points are determined in the decision on rates approved by the Lahti Region Waste Management Committee. Regional collection points are only available in areas where the municipality is responsible for waste management. Read more.

The rates apply to waste for which the municipality is responsible for arranging collection and waste for which the municipality is secondarily responsible for arranging collection. The rates are applicable in the municipalities governed and decided by the Lahti Region Waste Management Committee. The rates do not pertain to the fees charged by private companies when the property owner arranges waste collection.

MUNICIPAL WASTE CHARGE

In the region, a municipal waste charge pursuant to Section 78 of the Waste Act (646/2011) is charged and it is used to finance the statutory municipal waste management operations. This charge is household-specific. The party owning the property at the time of invoicing is liable for the charge. The fee is set for one calendar year at a time. It is determined on the basis of the intended use of the building. The grounds for the fee and its amount are determined in the decision on rates approved by the Lahti Region Waste Management Committee. The funds accumulated via these fees are not used for daily waste management activities.

EXCESS PAYMENTS

A general practice is in use for excess payments made by customers. Excess payments of more than €16 are paid into an account specified by the customer. If the customer has any overdue unpaid invoices, the excess payment is used to cover these. If the customer who made the excess payment receives regular invoices and the excess payment is moderate in relation to the invoiced amount, the excess amount can be reduced from the next invoice. An excess payment of less than €16 is only reimbursed upon specific request by the customer. This practice applies to fees charged by Salpakierto Oy, such as municipal waste charges and fees charged for waste collection.
